Types of Cataracts and Their Differences

Cataracts can occur at any age but are most commonly found in those aged 60 and older. Our eyes develop cataracts as we age because the protein begins to break down. Fortunately, cataract surgery is common, and risks from the surgery are minimal. There are different types of cataracts, but no matter what symptoms you may be experiencing, our cataract specialist at Slingsby & Huot Eye Associates in Rapid City, SD, can suggest a cataract procedure to help improve your vision.

Different Types of Cataracts

There are five types of cataracts: age-related, traumatic, radiation, pediatric, and secondary. The type of cataract most people get is age-related. As you age, your vision may blur, and you may need more light, yet you are also sensitive to light, colors look faded, and you have trouble seeing at night. You may notice halos around lights. These are all symptoms of cataracts. Once these symptoms begin to affect your quality of life, surgery may be required.

•             Traumatic cataracts: These can occur suddenly after an injury or may form years afterward.

•             Radiation cataracts: Seen in those who love to be out in the sun without UV protection or patients undergoing radiation cancer treatment.

•             Pediatric cataracts: While rare, even children can get cataracts. Some occur at birth, while others develop as they age. This type of cataract is usually genetic, caused by problems during pregnancy, or a result of a childhood illness.

•             Secondary cataracts: Occur when you have cataract surgery, and scar tissue develops, making your vision blurry again.

Treatment at Slingsby & Huot Eye Associates

When you visit our ophthalmology eye doctor, they will conduct an exam to determine the necessary cataract treatment steps. It may be something as simple as a new prescription for your glasses. When the time comes, cataract surgery is scheduled. This surgery takes about 30 minutes, but there are steps you need to follow before and after the surgery.
