Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty at Slingsby & Huot Eye Associates

Eye plastic surgery is among the most common types of cosmetic surgery. At Slingsby & Huot Eye Assocites Prof, LLC, we are happy to offer procedures such as blepharoplasty to patients in and around the Rapid City, SD, area. This surgery is used to fix defects, deformities, and disfigurations of the eyelid. Our ophthalmologist can examine your eyelids and determine if blepharoplasty is right for you.

How Plastic Surgery Can Help Your Vision

Not only can a drooping eyelid be visually displeasing and make you look older, but it can also interfere with your vision, particularly your peripheral vision. Droopy eyelids may be more common as you age, although some people naturally have droopy eyelids. Fortunately, blepharoplasty can correct the issue by removing excess skin, muscle, or fat to prevent the appearance of drooping and resolving vision problems caused by saggy eyelids.

Our skilled surgeon performs this surgery by making a small incision in the natural crease of the eyelid to remove excess tissue before closing the incision. Occasionally, our ophthalmologist may additionally perform a procedure known as ptosis to give additional support to your eyebrow muscle.

What to Expect After Blepharoplasty

Immediately after the surgery, you might experience blurry vision, dry or watery eyes, double vision, sensitivity to light, swelling, bruising, or puffy eyelids. However, these side effects subside within 14 days for most people. You can reduce symptoms such as swelling or pain by using an ice pack for 10 minutes every hour after the surgery and wearing sunglasses when exposed to sunlight or wind. Although you can use Tylenol for pain relief, you should avoid taking NSAIDs, including ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin. Use any eye drops or ointments our doctor prescribes to help with healing after the surgery.

It's important to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and swimming for a week following your procedure. Smoking can irritate your eyes after blepharoplasty. To avoid infection, do not rub your eyes or wear contacts as you heal from this surgery. You may need to return to our office to have stitches removed.
