What
is Refractive Lensectomy? Refractive
lensectomy is similar to cataract surgery except the crystalline
lens is still clear, not cloudy with a cataract. The procedure
treats nearsightedness and farsightedness by replacing the eye's
natural lens with an artificial lens that has the correct power.
The procedure is performed under topical anesthesia.
The
ophthalmololgist makes a small clear corneal incision and uses
ultrasound to break up the lens - this technique is called phacoemulsification.
The lens material is then extracted and replaced with an intraocular
lens (IOL).
Refractive
lensectomy is performed on an outpatient basis and only one eye
is treated at a time. Refractive lensectomy is often a good procedure
for patients who are not candidates for IntraLASIK® or other
laser vision correction procedures, are in their 40s or 50s, and
have a high degree of nearsightedness or farsightedness.
